A Letter to My Little One: Welcome to Army Life

To my little one,

Welcome to the world. Your dad and I are over the moon about your arrival. I am so glad to know you will forever be a part of our family. Everything about being your momma has me experiencing all the feelings – joy, love, happiness and a whole lot of nervousness. I’ve never been a mom before, so you’ll have to be patient with me as we figure all of this out together.

You were born at an Army hospital which is so fitting ─ you were truly born into the life of a military brat. I know “brat” sounds like a mean name, but I promise this will be one of the most cherished titles you’ll ever hold. My dad was in the Army, too, which means I have a pretty good idea of the kind of childhood you’ll have. It won’t always be easy, but the adventures and close relationships you’ll build will far outweigh any hardships. I’ll let you in on a few other secrets and tricks of the trade.

We’re probably going to move… a lot. You will plant roots wherever we are and will blossom in every new location. The moves themselves may be chaotic as we pack our whole house, drive across the country, and set it all up again. Think of this as a chance to start fresh while also getting to decorate a new bedroom.

You will learn how to make good friends very quickly. I’ll admit, the goodbyes don’t really get easier. But I can assure you, you will keep in touch because the farewells are more of “see ya later.” The Army is an incredibly small world where everyone seems to come back to each other. These friendships will be treasures you will hold on to forever.

The goodbyes won’t only be to friends. This might be the hardest part of being an Army brat. Sometimes your dad will have to go away for a while as part of his job. I will do everything I can to help the days pass quickly until he is home again. We will make fun countdown charts, talk to him as often as we can, listen to the stories he recorded for you, and take lots of photos so he never misses a moment more than he has to. You’ll be too little to remember, but when you were just three weeks old your dad left for 10 months. In your short life, you’ve already been through so much. I empathize, little one, and know everything you’ve endured will make you one strong person.

The experiences, challenges, and opportunities you will have because of this life will be infinite. They will make you resilient, adaptable, tough, and kind-hearted. I’m so glad to have you earth-side. Welcome to the Army, my sweet baby.

Love,
Momma

Nora, what a sweet letter. I’m also an Army brat and agree it is one of my favorite titles – right after Mom.
